Uptown New York (1932)

„Uptown New York“ is a 1932 pre-Code Black & White romantic drama film directed by Victor Schertzinger.

New Yorkers Patricia „Pat“ Smith and Max Silver, an aspiring Jewish doctor, fall in love, and share an intimate relationship. However, after Max receives his surgeon’s diploma, his father has arranged a marriage for him with a family friend from a rich, good background.

So, Max forsakes Patricia and obeys his father’s wishes, and marries that woman. He pursues his medical training in Vienna.

Over the years, Pat reads of Max’s successes in the newspaper. When he returns to New York, Max attempts to rekindle their romance, explaining how he actually loves her instead of his wife, but Pat rebukes him. Pat dislikes the idea of him seeing her on the side.

Heartbroken, Pat later meets a gumball machine salesman, Eddie Doyle, who falls in love with her and eventually proposes marriage, which she accepts.

After their marriage, in a hotel bridal suite, Pat informs Eddie of her first love. Pat offers to annul the marriage, but Eddie believes his love for her is strong enough to withstand the knowledge of a former love.

Later, While attempting to stop two teenagers from robbing one of Eddie’s gumball machines, Pat runs across the street without looking and is hit by a truck.

Eddie, chooses Max as the surgeon and rushes to Max, insisting that Max operate on Pat.

While in the hospital, awaiting surgery, Eddie overhears Pat murmuring Max’s name, and realizes her deep affection for her former lover.

Max’s operation saves Pat’s life, and later while Pat is in her hospital bed, Eddie overhears Max’s conversation with Pat about their love, and his decision to divorce his wife. He will take Pat to Vienna to get well, and they will get married.

Because Eddie believes that Pat is going to run off with Max.

Eddie decides to walk out on Pat, sells his business to pay her hospital bills, and disappear.

Through complications, and a fight, over Eddie’s attempt to pay Pat’s hospital bill by selling his company, which he only owns half of, Pat owns the other half, Eddie ends up in jail.

Unable to locate Eddie, Pat plans to recuperate on an ocean voyage and encounters Eddie’s friend, Al, at the dock. Al tells her that Eddie is in jail for selling his business, of which she was part owner, without her permission.

Pat rushes to the jail and explains the misunderstanding and proclaims her love for Eddie, and after she signs the sale form, Eddie is released, and they happily reconcile.
