„The Thief of Bagdad“ is a 1924 silent adventure film directed by Raoul Walsh The screenplay by Lotta Woods and Achmed Abdullah is based on the story by Douglas Fairbanks, adapted by James T. O’Donohoe. The film is freely adapted from „One Thousand and One Nights“.

This Hollywood adventure classic was the first major film adaptation of a fairy tale from the Arabian Nights. The well-known actor Douglas Fairbanks, who was also involved in the screenplay and production, became a world star with the film: it is regarded as the artistic highlight of his career.
The Thief of Baghdad applies for the hand of the caliph’s daughter, but his reputation is not the best. Only after his purification and the use of magical powers does he achieve his goal.
The fantasy adventure uses elements of expressionist film and is full of amazing trick effects and astonishing ideas. The flight with the flying carpet became famous.

Der Hollywood-Abenteuer-Klassiker war die erste große Verfilmung eines Märchens aus Tausendundeiner Nacht. Der bekannte Schauspieler Douglas Fairbanks, der auch an Drehbuch und Produktion beteiligt war, avancierte mit dem Film zum Weltstar: er gilt als der künstlerische Höhepunkt seiner Karriere.
Der Dieb von Bagdad bewirbt sich um die Hand der Tochter des Kalifen, doch sein Leumund ist nicht der beste. Erst nach seiner Läuterung und den Einsatz von Zauberkräften kommt er zum Ziel.
Das Fantasyabenteuer nutzt Elemente des expressionistischen Films und steckt voller verblüffender Trickeffekte und erstaunlicher Einfälle. Bekannt wurde der Flug mit dem fliegenden Teppich.
