„Mr. Fix It“ is a 1918 silent comedy film directed by Allan Dwan, who also wrote the screenplay together with Joseph Henabery from a story suggested by Ernest Butterworth.

Reginald „Reggie“ Burroughs, studying at Oxford, is interrupted by the news that his dreadfully staid aunts wish him to take charge of his property in New York after his fifteen-year absence.

This is a problem. Reggie has just become engaged, and rich family would surely not approve of his fiancée, Marjorie Threadwell, who, though by no means poor, is not a member of the elite class that the Burroughs belong to.

Reluctant to leave his sweetheart, and on pain of having his allowance cut by 90%, Reggie agrees to allow his roommate, Dick Remington, to take his place as the head of the Burroughs family. His roommate is nicknamed „Mr. Fix-It“ because of his talent for mending broken-hearts.

Mr. Fix-It goes to America in place of his best friend, enters the aristocratic home of the Burroughs, impersonating their nephew, upsets the decorum at a stuffy family gathering, and turns their blue-nosed, stogy lives upside down.

Believing that the young man is Reggie, the aunts inform him that he is to marry Olive Van Tassell and that his sister, Georgiana Burroughs, must wed Gideon Van Tassell.

When he meets Mary McCollugh and her many little brothers and sisters, Mr. Fix-It brings them all into the Burroughs’ mansion, where they proceed to soften the old aunts’ hearts.

Before long he has melted the stone hearts of three aunts and one uncle.

Following a lovers’ misunderstanding as well as several adventures, Mr. Fix-It wins the heart of Mary.

Setting aright the affairs of both pretty Georgiana Burroughs and Olive Van Tassell, who are in love with other men, Mr. Fix-It obligingly refuses Olive and then helps her to win the man she loves, while simultaneously aiding Georgiana with her romance.

The arrival of a gang of hoodlums further disrupts the formalities, but our hero thwarts them and saves the day.

The film climaxes suddenly, and at least one scene is obviously missing (Mr. Fix-It leads a few friends into a room to meet his friend’s family and suddenly leaves the room through a different exit, excited that the encounter went so well).

Nur ungern verlässt Reggie seine Geliebte, und da er befürchten muss, dass sein Taschengeld um 90 % gekürzt wird, erklärt er sich damit einverstanden, dass sein Zimmergenosse Dick Remington seinen Platz als Oberhaupt der Familie Burroughs einnimmt. Sein Mitbewohner trägt den Spitznamen „Mr. Fix-It“, weil er ein Talent dafür hat, gebrochene Herzen zu heilen.

Mr. Fix-It reist anstelle seines besten Freundes nach Amerika, dringt in das aristokratische Haus der Burroughs ein, gibt sich als ihr Neffe aus, stört den Anstand bei einem spießigen Familientreffen und stellt das Leben der blauäugigen, verstaubten Familie auf den Kopf.

Die Tanten glauben, dass der junge Mann Reggie ist und teilen ihm mit, dass er Olive Van Tassell heiraten soll und dass seine Schwester Georgiana Burroughs Gideon Van Tassell heiraten muss.

Als er Mary McCollugh und ihre vielen kleinen Geschwister kennenlernt, bringt Mr. Fix-It sie alle in das Haus der Burroughs, wo sie die Herzen der alten Tanten erweichen sollen.

Schon bald hat er die steinernen Herzen von drei Tanten und einem Onkel zum Schmelzen gebracht.

Nach einem Missverständnis zwischen den Liebenden und mehreren Abenteuern gewinnt Mr. Fix-It das Herz von Mary.

Mr. Fix-It kümmert sich um die Angelegenheiten der hübschen Georgiana Burroughs und Olive Van Tassell, die beide in andere Männer verliebt sind. Er lehnt Olive zuvorkommend ab und hilft ihr dann, den Mann zu gewinnen, den sie liebt, während er gleichzeitig Georgiana bei ihrer Romanze hilft.

Das Auftauchen einer Bande von Ganoven stört die Formalitäten zusätzlich, aber unser Held vereitelt sie und rettet den Tag.

Der Film hat einen plötzlichen Höhepunkt, und mindestens eine Szene fehlt offensichtlich (Mr. Fix-It führt ein paar Freunde in einen Raum, um die Familie seines Freundes zu treffen, und verlässt den Raum plötzlich durch einen anderen Ausgang, erfreut darüber, dass die Begegnung so gut verlaufen ist).
