„A Tree Grows in Brooklyn“ is a 1945 drama film directed by Elia Kazan. The screenplay by Tess Slesinger and Frank Davis is based on the 1943 novel of the same name by Betty Smith.

Katie Nolan is a hard-working Irish American housewife who collects rags for sale, and scrubs the floors of her tenement building in order to provide for her family in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn in 1912.

She’s married to a happy-go-lucky singing waiter, and alcoholic, Johnny Nolan. They have two children, 13-year-old Francie, and 12-year-old Neeley.

Katie’s free-spirited sister, Aunt Sissy has recently married for the third time. Mr. Barker is the gossipy insurance agent who comes by to collect the’ weekly premium.

Scandalized and embarrassed, Katie cuts off her relationship with Sissy, which makes the children, who love their unconventional aunt, unhappy. Francie is also worried that the building’s landlord has cut too many branches off the tree in the tenement’s courtyard, which Francie and her father call the Tree of Heaven, and that it may die. But when she points this out to Johnny, he explains the cutting back is necessary and the tree will grow again.

Officer McShane is a police officer new to the neighborhood. When he meets Katie, he is enchanted, and is devastated to realize Katie is married.

The children’s Grandma Rommely often tells them about her immigration to the United States, and how important education is in life. Francie helps her father write a letter to the principal of a nicer school in a nearby neighborhood requesting a transfer, and is accepted.

Katie is pregnant and worried how they will support another child. Sissy also becomes pregnant, and she and Katie reconcile shortly before Christmas. The families celebrate a happy, poignant Christmas together. She suggests that Francie drop out of school to work. Since Johnny understands how much being in school means to his daughter, he feels desperate to find a job. Despite the fact that it’s snowing hard, Johnny goes out determined to find work but dies of pneumonia.

To provide financial help, a sympathetic tavern owner, Mr. McGarrity, gives Francie and Neeley after-school jobs.

After Neeley and Francie’s graduation ceremonies, the family reunites and finds Officer McShane babysitting Annie Laurie together with Sissy’s husband and his baby. McShane has been waiting to propose to Katie, who accepts. McShane also asks to adopt Annie Laurie. Francie and Neeley think Annie Laurie’s life with McShane as a father will be much easier, but not nearly as much fun.

The film ends as Francie sees the courtyard tree begin to grow again, just as her father said it would.

Die Familien feiern ein fröhliches, ergreifendes Weihnachtsfest zusammen. Sie schlägt vor, dass Francie die Schule verlässt, um zu arbeiten. Da Johnny versteht, wie viel die Schule für seine Tochter bedeutet, sucht er verzweifelt nach einem Job. Obwohl es in Strömen schneit, geht Johnny entschlossen los, um Arbeit zu finden, stirbt aber an einer Lungenentzündung.

Um ihm finanziell unter die Arme zu greifen, bietet der mitfühlende Kneipenbesitzer Mr. McGarrity Francie und Neeley Jobs nach der Schule an.

Nach der Abschlussfeier von Neeley und Francie kommt die Familie wieder zusammen und findet Officer McShane, der zusammen mit Sissys Mann und dessen Baby auf Annie Laurie aufpasst. McShane hat darauf gewartet, Katie einen Heiratsantrag zu machen, den sie annimmt. McShane bittet auch darum, Annie Laurie zu adoptieren. Francie und Neeley glauben, dass Annie Lauries Leben mit McShane als Vater viel einfacher sein wird, aber nicht annähernd so viel Spaß macht.

Der Film endet damit, dass Francie sieht, wie der Baum im Hof wieder zu wachsen beginnt, genau wie ihr Vater es gesagt hat.
