„The Squaw Man“ is a 1914 silent Western film directed by Cecil B. DeMille and Oscar C. Apfel based on the 1905 western/drama stage play in four acts written by Edwin Milton Royle.

A chivalrous British officer, James Wynnegate and his cousin, Henry, are upper-class Englishmen and trustees for an orphans’ fund. Henry loses money in a bet at a derby and embezzles money from „the fund“ to pay off his debts. When war office officials are informed of the money missing they pursue James, but he successfully escapes to Wyoming.

There, James rescues Nat-U-Ritch, daughter of the chief of the Ute tribe, from local outlaw Cash Hawkins. Hawkins plans to exact his revenge on James, but has his plans thwarted by Nat-U-Ritch, who shoots him dead. Later, James has an accident in the mountains and needs to be rescued. Nat-U-Ritch discovers him and carries him back to safety. As she nurses him back to health, they fall in love and later have a child.

Meanwhile, during an exploration of the Alps, Henry falls off a cliff. Before he succumbs to his injuries, Henry signs a letter of confession proclaiming James’s innocence in the embezzlement. Before Henry’s widow, Lady Diana and others arrive in Wyoming to tell James the news, the Sheriff recovers the murder weapon that was used against Cash Hawkins in James and Nat-U-Ritch’s home. Realizing that their son is not safe, the couple sends him away, leaving them both distraught. Facing the possibilities of losing both her son and her freedom, Nat-U-Ritch commits suicide. The movie ends with both the Ute chief and James embracing her body.

„The Squaw Man“ ist ein Stummfilm aus dem Jahr 1914 unter der Regie von Cecil B. DeMille und Oscar C. Apfel, der auf dem Western/Drama in vier Akten von Edwin Milton Royle aus dem Jahr 1905 basiert.

Der ritterliche britische Offizier James Wynnegate und sein Cousin Henry sind Engländer der Oberschicht und Treuhänder für einen Waisenfonds. Henry verliert bei einer Wette bei einem Derby und veruntreut Geld aus dem „Fonds“, um seine Schulden zu begleichen. Als die Beamten des Kriegsministeriums von dem fehlenden Geld erfahren, verfolgen sie James, aber es gelingt ihm, nach Wyoming zu fliehen.

Dort rettet James Nat-U-Ritch, die Tochter des Häuptlings des Ute-Stammes, vor dem örtlichen Gesetzlosen Cash Hawkins. Hawkins plant, sich an James zu rächen, wird aber von Nat-U-Ritch durchkreuzt, die ihn erschießt. Später hat James einen Unfall in den Bergen und muss gerettet werden. Nat-U-Ritch findet ihn und bringt ihn in Sicherheit. Während sie ihn wieder gesund pflegt, verlieben sich die beiden ineinander und bekommen ein Kind.

Währenddessen stürzt Henry bei einer Erkundungstour in den Alpen von einer Klippe. Bevor er seinen Verletzungen erliegt, unterschreibt er ein Geständnis, in dem er James' Unschuld an der Unterschlagung beteuert. Bevor Henrys Witwe, Lady Diana und andere in Wyoming eintreffen, um James die Nachricht zu überbringen, findet der Sheriff die Mordwaffe, die gegen Cash Hawkins verwendet wurde, im Haus von James und Nat-U-Ritch. Als das Paar erkennt, dass ihr Sohn nicht in Sicherheit ist, schickt es ihn weg und lässt beide verzweifelt zurück. Angesichts der Möglichkeit, sowohl ihren Sohn als auch ihre Freiheit zu verlieren, begeht Nat-U-Ritch Selbstmord. Der Film endet damit, dass sowohl der Ute-Häuptling als auch James ihre Leiche umarmen.
