The Man Who Laughs (1928)

„The Man Who Laughs“ is a 1928 romantic drama film directed by the German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni. The screenplay by J. Grubb Alexander, May McLean, Marion Ward and Charles E. Whittaker is an adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1869 novel of the same name. Intertitles by Walter Anthony.

Disfigured by a king as a child, an 18th-century clown again becomes the pawn of royalty and star of the freak show of a travelling carnival.
