„International Crime“ is a 1938 crime mystery adventure drama film, directed by Charles Lamont. The screenplay by Jack Natteford, John W. Krafft and Walter B. Gibson is based on the 1937 story „Fox Hound“ Theodore A. Tinsley.

Newspaperman Lamont Cranston is known for his crime busting daily column in The Star as well as his nightly broadcasts as „The Shadow“ on the The Star radio station. The public adores him. Criminals fear him. To Police Commissioner Weston, he’s a thorn in his side.

Cub Star reporter Phoebe Lane, the owner’s niece, has a story about an imminent robbery, The Shadow broadcasts the information. The police investigate, and find nothing. There has been an explosion at the home of financier Gerald Morton, killed in what appears the police theorize to be a robbery attempt on his safe. The Shadow doesn’t buy it, even though the modus operandi is that of famed safecracker „Honest John“.

Weston has Cranston arrested as a material witness. Phoebe and his driver Moe get him out of jail in time for his next broadcast. During the program, Honest John breaks into the studio and forces the Shadow at gunpoint to say he’s not the killer, then escapes.

Morton’s brother, Roger, and his attorney protest the Shadow’s implication that Morton was involved in some crooked dealings.

The next day, The Shadow helps Phoebe find her bogus informant, Flotow. The Shadow poses as an Austrian baron and Phoebe poses as his wife. Flotow and his cohort Storkhov make plans to do away with „the Baron,“ whom they know to be The Shadow.

While Flotow and Storkhov await the Shadow, he searches Flotow’s apartment and is interrupted by the eager Phoebe. Soon after a man with a German accent telephones the apartment, two men come to the door and confront Phoebe and the Shadow. They are saved just in time by Moe, who uses a cigarette case shaped like a gun to fool the thugs. Because the Shadow has been able to obtain incriminating evidence on the international financing of Germanic aristocrats, he writes a column saying The Shadow knows who the killers are and accuses the police of stupidity in handling the case, again angering Weston.

Honest John confronts the Shadow, reveals that he really has been trying to go straight and agrees to join forces to find the real killer. They go to Roger Morton’s house, where Flotow and his friends confront Roger, ordering him to hand over bonds from the safe that he, and not his brother Gerald, had been handling for them. The police arrive, everyone is arrested, leaving The Shadow free just in time for his next broadcast.

Der Zeitungsmann Lamont Cranston ist bekannt für seine tägliche Kolumne in The Star, in der er Verbrechen aufdeckt, sowie für seine nächtlichen Sendungen als „The Shadow“ auf dem Radiosender The Star. Die Öffentlichkeit verehrt ihn. Kriminelle fürchten ihn. Für Polizeipräsident Weston ist er ein Dorn im Auge.

Als die Reporterin des Cub Star, Phoebe Lane, die Nichte des Besitzers, über einen bevorstehenden Raubüberfall berichtet, sendet der Schatten die Information. Die Polizei ermittelt, findet aber nichts. Es gab eine Explosion im Haus des Finanziers Gerald Morton, der bei einem versuchten Raubüberfall auf seinen Safe getötet wurde. Der Schatten glaubt das nicht, auch wenn der Modus Operandi der des berühmten Safeknackers „Honest John“ ist.

Weston lässt Cranston als wichtigen Zeugen verhaften. Phoebe und sein Fahrer Moe holen ihn rechtzeitig für seine nächste Sendung aus dem Gefängnis. Während der Sendung bricht Honest John in das Studio ein und zwingt den Schatten mit vorgehaltener Waffe zu sagen, dass er nicht der Mörder ist, und entkommt dann.

Mortons Bruder Roger und sein Anwalt protestieren gegen die Anschuldigung des Schattens, Morton sei in krumme Geschäfte verwickelt.

Am nächsten Tag hilft der Schatten Phoebe, ihren falschen Informanten, Flotow, zu finden. Der Schatten gibt sich als österreichischer Baron aus, und Phoebe gibt sich als seine Frau aus. Flotow und sein Komplize Storkhov schmieden Pläne, um „den Baron“ auszuschalten, von dem sie wissen, dass er der Schatten ist.

Während Flotow und Storkhov auf den Schatten warten, durchsucht dieser Flotows Wohnung und wird von der eifrigen Phoebe gestört. Kurz nachdem ein Mann mit deutschem Akzent in der Wohnung angerufen hat, kommen zwei Männer an die Tür und stellen Phoebe und den Schatten zur Rede. Sie werden gerade noch rechtzeitig von Moe gerettet, der ein Zigarettenetui in Form einer Pistole benutzt, um die Schläger zu täuschen. Weil der Schatten belastende Beweise für die internationale Finanzierung germanischer Aristokraten beschaffen konnte, schreibt er eine Kolumne, in der er behauptet, der Schatten wisse, wer die Mörder sind, und beschuldigt die Polizei der Dummheit im Umgang mit dem Fall, was wiederum Weston verärgert.

Honest John konfrontiert den Schatten, offenbart, dass er wirklich versucht hat, aufrichtig zu werden, und erklärt sich bereit, mit vereinten Kräften den wahren Mörder zu finden. Sie gehen zum Haus von Roger Morton, wo Flotow und seine Freunde Roger zur Rede stellen und ihm befehlen, die Anleihen aus dem Safe auszuhändigen, die er und nicht sein Bruder Gerald für sie verwaltet hatte. Als die Polizei eintrifft, werden alle verhaftet, so dass The Shadow gerade noch rechtzeitig für seine nächste Sendung frei kommt.
