„Dishonored Lady“ is a 1947 film-noir crime film directed by Robert Stevenson. The screenplay by Edmund H. North, André De Toth and Ben Hecht is based on the 1930 play of the same name by Edward Sheldon and Margaret Ayer Barnes.

Beautiful Madeleine Damien, the art editor for „Boulevard,“ a New York City magazine is seeing Freddie Fancher, while at the same time encouraging the affection of her boss, Victor Kranish.

Wealthy advertiser Felix Courtland aggressively pursues Madeleine, and on the night of their first meeting, they make love. Later, Madeleine tries to commit suicide and crashes her car in front of the home of a psychiatrist, Dr. Richard Caleb.

Her assistant, Jack Garet, with whom she was once involved, blackmails her. So, she quits her job and drops out of New York society. Living under an assumed name, Madeleine becomes a painter and a recluse.

Madeleine soon meets fellow tenant Dr. David S. Cousins, a research pathologist, and he falls in love with her sweet disposition, unaware of her troubled past. The night David proposes to Madeleine, she returns home and finds Courtland waiting for her. He assumes she still wants him and kisses her, leaving her confused.

While David is out of town, Madeleine meets Ethel Royce, a former co-worker, at The Stork Club to help her with the magazine, and gets drunk. Jack Garet, who was fired from the magazine and has since become Courtland’s personal secretary, sees Madeleine in the restaurant and telephones Courtland, who accuses him of stealing a precious stone from his home safe.

Courtland arrives and takes Madeleine to his mansion to convince her to return to him. They are about to kiss when Courtland leaves her to answer the door. Unaware that Garet has arrived, Madeleine sneaks out and walks home. He and Courtland fight, and Garet kills his boss with a blow from a table cigarette lighter.

Madeleine is charged with the murder. David takes the witness stand and is asked if he still loves her, and he replies affirmatively. David confronts Garet, and Garet is arrested and confesses to the murder, and Madeleine is declared innocent.

Madeleine leaves David a letter explaining that she cannot marry him. While Madeleine is at the airport waiting for a plane, David arrives just in time to grab Madeleine on the tarmac, and the plane departs without her as the two embrace.

In der Nacht, in der David Madeleine einen Heiratsantrag macht, kehrt sie nach Hause zurück und findet Courtland vor, der auf sie wartet. Er nimmt an, dass sie ihn immer noch will, küsst sie und lässt sie verwirrt zurück.

Während David nicht in der Stadt ist, trifft sich Madeleine mit Ethel Royce, einer ehemaligen Mitarbeiterin, im Stork Club, um ihr bei der Zeitschrift zu helfen, und betrinkt sich. Madeleine wird des Mordes angeklagt. David wird im Zeugenstand gefragt, ob er sie noch liebt, was er bejaht. David stellt Garet zur Rede, und Garet wird verhaftet und gesteht den Mord, während Madeleine für unschuldig erklärt wird.

Madeleine hinterlässt David einen Brief, in dem sie ihm erklärt, dass sie ihn nicht heiraten kann. Während Madeleine am Flughafen auf ein Flugzeug wartet, kommt David gerade noch rechtzeitig, um Madeleine auf dem Rollfeld zu ergreifen, und das Flugzeug fliegt ohne sie ab, während sich die beiden umarmen.
