„The Lady From Shanghai“ is a 1947 film-noir crime drama mystery thriller film directed by Orson Welles, who also wrote the screenplay together with William Castle, Charles Lederer and Fletcher Markle, based on the 1938 novel „If I Die Before I Wake“ by Raymond Sherwood King.

In New York City’s Central Park, Michael O’Hara, an Irish merchant sailor, rescues the beautiful Elsa Bannister from thieves. Elsa is married to the renowned lawyer Arthur Bannister. Arthur, a cripple, offers Michael a job on his yacht, which Michael reluctantly accepts. The yacht sets sail from New York to San Francisco with Michael, the Bannisters, Arthur’s partner, George Grisby, and a small crew.

During the trip, Michael falls in love with Elsa, and learns that she agreed to marry Arthur only after he threatened to expose her shady past in Shanghai. They are being watched by the yacht’s steward, Sidney Broome, who is actually a detective hired by Arthur to keep watch over Elsa.

In Acapulco, Grisby tells Michael that he intended to disappear on the voyage so that his wife could collect his life insurance money, and offers Michael $5,000 to confess to killing him. Grisby assures Michael he can’t be convicted because there won’t be a corpse. Hoping that $5,000 will buy Elsa’s freedom from Arthur, Michael agrees to sign the confession.

Later, Grisby shoots Broome when Broome accuses him of planning the staged murder as part of a ploy to kill Arthur. The wounded Broome then finds Elsa and tells her that Arthur is about to be killed by Grisby.

At the waterfront, Michael fires three shots into the air, and Grisby speeds away on a motor boat. A short time later, Michael is surprised when he learns that Grisby has been killed. The police find Michael’s signed confession, and arrest him for the murder of Grisby. Arthur volunteers to defend him.

In court, Arthur admits to Michael that he killed Grisby. Michael punches Arthur, two bailiffs, escapes and takes refuge in a Chinatown theater. Elsa finds him there. Michael discovers the missing gun hidden in Elsa’s purse, and realizes that Elsa murdered Grisby. Pills he took take effect, Michael loses consciousness, and is taken by Elsa’s servant to an amusement park fun house.

Michael regains consciousness in a hall of mirrors, where he witnesses a gun duel between Elsa and Arthur, mortally wounding each other, during which Arthur reveals that he sent a letter to the district attorney establishing Elsa’s guilt, and exonerating Michael.

Im Central Park von New York City rettet Michael O'Hara, ein irischer Handelssegler, die schöne Elsa Bannister vor Dieben. Elsa ist mit dem renommierten Anwalt Arthur Bannister verheiratet. Arthur, ein Krüppel, bietet Michael einen Job auf seiner Jacht an, den Michael widerwillig annimmt. Mit Michael, den Bannisters, Arthurs Partner George Grisby und einer kleinen Crew segelt die Yacht von New York nach San Francisco.

Während der Reise verliebt sich Michael in Elsa und erfährt, dass sie Arthur nur heiraten wollte, nachdem er ihr gedroht hatte, ihre zwielichtige Vergangenheit in Shanghai aufzudecken. Sie werden vom Steward der Yacht, Sidney Broome, beobachtet, der in Wirklichkeit ein Detektiv ist, der von Arthur angeheuert wurde, um auf Elsa aufzupassen.

In Acapulco erzählt Grisby Michael, dass er vorhatte, auf der Reise zu verschwinden, damit seine Frau das Geld aus seiner Lebensversicherung kassieren kann, und bietet Michael 5.000 Dollar an, wenn er gesteht, ihn getötet zu haben. Grisby versichert Michael, dass er nicht verurteilt werden kann, weil es keine Leiche geben wird. In der Hoffnung, dass 5.000 Dollar Elsas Freiheit von Arthur erkaufen, stimmt Michael zu, das Geständnis zu unterschreiben.

Später erschießt Grisby Broome, als dieser ihn beschuldigt, den inszenierten Mord als Teil eines Plans zur Ermordung von Arthur geplant zu haben. Der verwundete Broome findet dann Elsa und erzählt ihr, dass Arthur von Grisby getötet werden soll.

Am Hafen gibt Michael drei Schüsse in die Luft ab, und Grisby fährt mit einem Motorboot davon. Kurze Zeit später ist Michael überrascht, als er erfährt, dass Grisby getötet worden ist. Die Polizei findet Michaels unterschriebenes Geständnis und verhaftet ihn wegen des Mordes an Grisby. Arthur meldet sich freiwillig, um ihn zu verteidigen.

Vor Gericht gibt Arthur gegenüber Michael zu, dass er Grisby getötet hat. Michael schlägt Arthur und zwei Gerichtsvollzieher, flieht und flüchtet in ein Theater in Chinatown. Elsa findet ihn dort. Michael entdeckt die fehlende Waffe, die in Elsas Handtasche versteckt war, und erkennt, dass Elsa Grisby ermordet hat. Die von ihm eingenommenen Pillen zeigen Wirkung, Michael verliert das Bewusstsein und wird von Elsas Diener in einen Vergnügungspark mitgenommen.

Michael kommt in einem Spiegelkabinett wieder zu sich, wo er Zeuge eines Pistolenduells zwischen Elsa und Arthur wird, bei dem sie sich gegenseitig tödlich verletzen. Dabei enthüllt Arthur, dass er einen Brief an den Staatsanwalt geschickt hat, in dem Elsas Schuld nachgewiesen und Michael entlastet wird.
