„Mud and Sand“ is a 1922 silent short film directed by Gilbert Pratt. Intertitles by Tom Miranda. The film is a parody of the Rudolph Valentino film “Blood and Sand”. For example, Dona Sol becomes Filet de Sole and Carmen becomes Caramel.

Rhubarb Vaseline and his friend Sapo go to the bullring and queue for a job as a matador.

The first volunteer, Don Sox, is taken out on a stretcher. The second volunteer Don Pedro has a similar fate. His friend Don Sapo is next but does no better. Rhubarb announces himself as Don Vaseline and goes in to avenge Sapo. A bull gets thrown over the gate, then another. Rhubarb marks up a score of three in anticipation but on the third he is thrown over the gate. He erases the third score and re-enters.

The third bull comes out on a stretcher and Rhubarb leaves triumphant. The crowd carries him through the streets where he meets an old school friend, sweet little Caramel (Julie Leonard, as Julia Leonard), with her father.

Rhubarb goes home. As he bends over, the goat sees it as too much temptation and butts him. His mum chases him with a broom, until she is shown the money he won at the bull fight. He is invited to fight in Madrid.

He serenades Caramel under her window, dressed as a matador. Caramel asks if he will drink in Madrid. He answers „anything!“, and says they will meet at sunrise to marry.

His „throwing the bull“ becomes the sensation of Madrid for two years. Crowds cheer him.

He goes to the Cafe Espagnol and meets Filet de Sole a temptress and Pavaloosky (Mae Laurel) a dancer, and they dance a tango. Two rival matadors sabotage his dance. When Filet de sole starts flirting, he drops Pavaloosky in the fountain.

At Filet de Sole’s apartment, just as Rhubarb is about to embrace, Caramel enters with his mother. He tells Caramel he is innocent and only wanted to see her gowns.

Preparing for a fight against a bull that has killed ten men, Rhubarb falls out of the window onto the bull as he is cheered all the way to the arena. Paying more attention to girls than to where he is going.

In the bull ring the crowd adores him. From the crowd de Sole says to the two rival matadors that she must kill him. She gives them a bottle of ether. They soak his cloak in ether. He picks it up and starts waving it in front of the bull’s nose. The bull falls asleep. He is drowsy too and staggers around. The crowds throw hats in celebration. De Sole throws a brick and kills him … a line of attendants walk up and pour sand from buckets until he is covered.

The moral, shown onscreen: „If you want to live long – and be happy – cut out the bull!“

Der erste Freiwillige, Don Sox, wird auf einer Bahre abtransportiert. Der zweite Freiwillige, Don Pedro, erleidet ein ähnliches Schicksal. Sein Freund Don Sapo ist der nächste, dem es nicht besser geht. Rhabarber gibt sich als Don Vaseline zu erkennen und geht hinein, um Sapo zu rächen. Ein Stier wird über das Tor geworfen, dann noch einer. Rhabarber schreibt drei Punkte auf, aber beim dritten wird er über das Tor geworfen. Er löscht den dritten Punktestand und geht wieder hinein.

Der dritte Stier kommt auf einer Bahre heraus, und Rhabarber geht triumphierend hinaus. Die Menge trägt ihn durch die Straßen, wo er eine alte Schulfreundin, die süße kleine Caramel (Julie Leonard, als Julia Leonard), mit ihrem Vater trifft.

Rhabarber geht nach Hause. Als er sich bückt, sieht die Ziege das als zu große Versuchung und stößt ihn. Seine Mutter jagt ihn mit einem Besen, bis sie ihm das Geld zeigt, das er beim Stierkampf gewonnen hat. Er wird eingeladen, in Madrid zu kämpfen.

Er bringt Caramel unter ihrem Fenster ein Ständchen, verkleidet als Matador. Caramel fragt ihn, ob er in Madrid etwas trinken wird. Er antwortet: „Alles!“, und sagt, dass sie sich bei Sonnenaufgang treffen werden, um zu heiraten.

Sein „Stierwurf“ wird für zwei Jahre zur Sensation in Madrid. Die Menschenmenge jubelt ihm zu.

Im Cafe Espagnol trifft er Filet de Sole, eine Verführerin, und Pavaloosky (Mae Laurel), eine Tänzerin, und sie tanzen einen Tango. Zwei rivalisierende Matadore sabotieren seinen Tanz. Als Filet de Sole zu flirten beginnt, wirft er Pavaloosky in den Brunnen.

In der Wohnung von Filet de Sole, als Rhabarber sich gerade umarmen will, kommt Caramel mit seiner Mutter herein. Er sagt Caramel, er sei unschuldig und wolle nur ihre Kleider sehen.

Rhabarber bereitet sich auf einen Kampf gegen einen Stier vor, der zehn Männer getötet hat, und stürzt aus dem Fenster auf den Stier, während er auf dem Weg zur Arena bejubelt wird. Er achtet mehr auf die Mädchen als darauf, wohin er geht.

In der Stierkampfarena verehrt ihn die Menge. Aus der Menge heraus sagt de Sole zu den beiden rivalisierenden Matadoren, dass sie ihn töten muss. Sie gibt ihnen eine Flasche mit Äther. Sie tränken seinen Mantel in Äther. Er hebt ihn auf und fängt an, ihn vor der Nase des Stiers zu schwenken. Der Stier schläft ein. Auch er wird schläfrig und taumelt herum. Die Menge wirft feierlich Hüte. De Sole wirft einen Ziegelstein und tötet ihn ... eine Reihe von Dienern kommt herbei und schüttet Sand aus Eimern, bis er bedeckt ist.

Die Moral, die auf dem Bildschirm gezeigt wird: „Wenn du lange leben und glücklich sein willst, lass den Stier weg!“
