„Fortune Is a Woman“ ia a 1957  film noir crime film directed by Sidney Gilliat, who also wrote the screenplay together with Frank Launder and Val Valentine, based on the 1952 eponymous novel by Winston Graham.

Hawkins is an insurance investigator who discovers that Price is selling valuable paintings to rich Americans and substituting forgeries that are mysteriously destroyed in fires, thus collecting twice for the same paintings. When Price accidentally dies in one of his fires, a romance between Hawkins and Price’s wife is rekindled.

Hawkins ist ein Versicherungsdetektiv, der herausfindet, dass Price wertvolle Gemälde an reiche Amerikaner verkauft und sie durch Fälschungen ersetzt, die auf mysteriöse Weise bei Bränden zerstört werden, so dass er zweimal für dieselben Gemälde kassiert. Als Price bei einem seiner Brände versehentlich ums Leben kommt, wird die Romanze zwischen Hawkins und Price’ Frau neu entfacht.
