„Between Midnight and Dawn“ is a 1950 film noir crime drama film directed by Gordon Douglas from a screenplay by Eugene Ling, based on a story by Gerald Drayson Adams and Leo Katcher.

Police Officers Rocky Barnes and Daniel Purvis, working the night shift, have been partners since they served in the war together. Although Rocky believes that even criminals have some good inside, Daniel is more cynical.

Daniel is particularly anxious to capture petty criminal Ritchie Garris, but is hampered by the fact that the victims of Garris’ strong-arm tactics refuse to testify against him.

Rocky is more interested in the face that belongs to the sultry voice of the night dispatcher, Katharine „Kate“ Mallory, a policeman’s daughter and the captain’s secretary.

Rocky and Daniel invite Kate to dinner at Garris’ club, and there they spot Leo Cusick, an important mobster from the East. Rocky and Daniel believe that Cusick’s presence at the club signals the beginning of a gang war to take control of the city. When the policemen drop Kate off at her home, she tells them there will be no more dates because she does not want to repeat her mother’s experience as a policeman’s widow. Kate’s mother, on the other hand, encourages the men’s interest in her daughter by renting them the flat next door.

When a man is killed outside Cusick’s loan company, the police converge on the building. Rocky and Daniel arrive first and chase Garris and his henchman, Joe Quist, as Kate listens over the radio, realizes that she has fallen in love with Rocky and agrees to marry him.

Garris is found guilty of murder, and threatens revenge on Rocky and Daniel. Later, Garris escapes from jail and carries out his threat, killing Rocky. Determined to avenge his partner, Daniel sets up a constant watch on Garris’ girl friend, Terry Romaine. When Garris shows up at Terry’s apartment, she tells him that she wants nothing to do with him. In order to prevent her from leaving him, Garris then takes Terry’s young neighbor Kathy hostage.

Police surround the building, but Garris spots them and holds Kathy out the window, threatening to drop her. Daniel offers to try to reach Garris without harming Kathy. Once he is outside Terry’s apartment, Daniel uses tear gas and shoots at Garris. Garris returns his fire, but Terry takes the bullet that was meant for Daniel. Daniel then kills Garris. Terry’s unselfish action alters Daniel’s belief that people do not change for the better, and Kate expresses her approval of his new attitude.

Rocky und Daniel laden Kate zum Abendessen in Garris' Club ein, und dort treffen sie auf Leo Cusick, einen wichtigen Mafioso aus dem Osten. Rocky und Daniel glauben, dass Cusicks Anwesenheit im Club der Beginn eines Bandenkrieges ist, der die Kontrolle über die Stadt übernehmen soll. Als die Polizisten Kate zu Hause absetzen, sagt sie ihnen, dass es keine weiteren Verabredungen geben wird, weil sie die Erfahrung ihrer Mutter als Polizistenwitwe nicht wiederholen möchte. Kates Mutter hingegen fördert das Interesse der Männer an ihrer Tochter, indem sie ihnen die Wohnung nebenan vermietet.

Als ein Mann vor Cusicks Kreditfirma ermordet wird, stürmt die Polizei das Gebäude. Rocky und Daniel treffen zuerst ein und jagen Garris und seinen Handlanger Joe Quist, während Kate über das Funkgerät zuhört, erkennt, dass sie sich in Rocky verliebt hat und zustimmt, ihn zu heiraten.

Garris wird des Mordes für schuldig befunden und droht mit Rache an Rocky und Daniel. Später bricht Garris aus dem Gefängnis aus und macht seine Drohung wahr, indem er Rocky tötet. Entschlossen, seinen Partner zu rächen, lässt Daniel Garris' Freundin, Terry Romaine, ständig überwachen. Als Garris in Terrys Wohnung auftaucht, sagt sie ihm, dass sie nichts mit ihm zu tun haben will. Um sie daran zu hindern, ihn zu verlassen, nimmt Garris daraufhin Terrys junge Nachbarin Kathy als Geisel.

Die Polizei umstellt das Gebäude, aber Garris entdeckt sie und hält Kathy aus dem Fenster und droht, sie fallen zu lassen. Daniel bietet an, zu versuchen, Garris zu erreichen, ohne Kathy zu verletzen. Als er vor Terrys Wohnung steht, setzt Daniel Tränengas ein und schießt auf Garris. Garris erwidert das Feuer, aber Terry fängt die Kugel ab, die für Daniel bestimmt war. Daraufhin tötet Daniel Garris. Terrys selbstloses Handeln ändert Daniels Überzeugung, dass sich Menschen nicht zum Besseren verändern, und Kate drückt ihre Zustimmung zu seiner neuen Einstellung aus.
