„The Three Musketeers“ is a 1921 silent adventure film directed by Fred Niblo. The screenplay by Edward Knoblock, Lotta Woods and Douglas Fairbanks is based on the 1844 novel of the same title by Alexandre Dumas, père.
At the French royal court, Cardinal Richelieu fights for influence over King Louis XIII. The greatest obstacle to his supremacy is Anne of Austria, the Queen of France. Anne is loved by the Duke of Buckingham, an Englishman, although she remains loyal to Louis. Louis gives her a brooch set with diamonds.
In Gascony, d’Artagnan leaves his home to seek his fortune. He travels to Paris, where he meets the three musketeers. The three musketeers and d’Artagnan cause unrest in Paris and frequently fight with Cardinal Richelieu’s guards. d’Artagnan falls in love with Constance, the queen’s seamstress.
Cardinal Richelieu forges a letter from Anne to the Duke of Buckingham and invites him to Paris. The Duke arrives, but Anne gently rejects him. He asks for a memento of her. Anne gives the Duke her diamond brooch and he returns to England. Richelieu persuades the King to ask Anne to wear the brooch at an upcoming ball.
Knowing that the queen will be dishonored if the brooch is considered missing, Constance asks d’Artagnan to fetch the brooch from England. d’Artagnan and the three musketeers set off for England. Richelieu learns of d’Artagnan’s mission and sends his agents to stop him. One by one, the three musketeers stay behind to prevent d’Artagnan from falling into the cardinal’s traps. d’Artagnan sails to England and recovers the brooch. He returns to Paris to present the brooch to Queen Anne. d’Artagnan, Constance and the Three Musketeers are reunited. d’Artagnan becomes a member of the King’s Musketeers.

Am französischen Königshof kämpft Kardinal Richelieu um den Einfluss auf König Ludwig XIII. Das größte Hindernis für seine Vorherrschaft ist Anne von Österreich, die Königin von Frankreich. Anne wird vom Herzog von Buckingham, einem Engländer, geliebt, obwohl sie Ludwig treu bleibt. Ludwig schenkt ihr eine mit Diamanten besetzte Brosche.
In der Gascogne verlässt d’Artagnan seine Heimat, um sein Glück zu suchen. Er reist nach Paris, wo er die drei Musketiere trifft. Die drei Musketiere und d’Artagnan sorgen in Paris für Unruhe und liefern sich häufig Kämpfe mit den Wächtern von Kardinal Richelieu. d’Artagnan verliebt sich in Constance, die Näherin der Königin.
Kardinal Richelieu fälscht einen Brief von Anne an den Herzog von Buckingham und lädt ihn nach Paris ein. Der Herzog trifft ein, aber Anne weist ihn sanft zurück. Er bittet um ein Andenken an sie. Anne schenkt dem Herzog ihre Diamantbrosche und er kehrt nach England zurück. Richelieu bringt den König dazu, Anne zu bitten, die Brosche bei einem bevorstehenden Ball zu tragen.
Da sie weiß, dass die Königin entehrt wird, wenn die Brosche als vermisst gilt, bittet Constance d’Artagnan, die Brosche aus England zu holen. d’Artagnan und die drei Musketiere brechen nach England auf. Richelieu erfährt von d’Artagnans Mission und schickt seine Agenten, um ihn aufzuhalten. Einer nach dem anderen bleiben die drei Musketiere zurück, um zu verhindern, dass d’Artagnan in die Fallen des Kardinals tappt. d’Artagnan segelt nach England und holt die Brosche zurück. Er kehrt nach Paris zurück, um die Brosche Königin Anne zu übergeben. d’Artagnan, Constance und die Drei Musketiere sind wieder vereint. d’Artagnan wird Mitglied der Musketiere des Königs.
