„Terror by Night“ is a 1946 crime drama directed by Roy William Neill from a screenplay by Frank Gruber. The plot of the film is not directly based on one of Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes stories, but uses smaller plot elements from „The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle“, „The Adventure of the Empty House“, „The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax“ and „The Sign of the Four“.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are tasked with protecting the Star of Rhodesia diamond on a train journey to Edinburgh, but when Roland Carstairs is murdered and the diamond stolen, Holmes suspects that the notorious criminal Colonel Sebastian Moran is behind the crime and sets out to apprehend him with the help of Inspector Lestrade.
