One Is Business, the Other Crime (1912)

„One Is Business, the Other Crime“ is a 1912 short silent drama film directed by D. W. Griffith from a screenplay by George Hennessy.

Two young couples swear to follow the right path at their wedding. One couple lives in modest circumstances, the other is somewhat better off. Later, the poor young man becomes unemployed and finds himself in dire straits. The other plays an important role in politics and is in better financial shape. We see him being offered a bribe of 1,000 dollars to vote for the passage of a suffrage law in favor of the streetcar, with the promise that he will get even more if the law is passed. He hides this from his wife because, although he thinks it is a deal, he doesn't want to tell her for fear she won't understand. However, she discovers his secret when the poor man, driven to despair by his poverty, tries to steal the money. Her eyes are opened when she reads the letter enclosed with the money, and instead of allowing her husband to call the police, she persuades him to release the man and see his crime as she sees it. The politician now realizes that the straight path is the right path.

Zwei junge Paare schwören bei ihrer Hochzeit, den rechten Weg zu gehen. Das eine Paar lebt in einfachen Verhältnissen, das andere ist etwas besser dran. Später wird der arme junge Mann arbeitslos und gerät dadurch in arge Bedrängnis. Der andere spielt in der Politik eine wichtige Rolle und in einer besseren finanziellen Verfassung. Wir sehen, wie ihm ein Bestechungsgeld von 1.000 Dollar angeboten wird, damit er für die Verabschiedung eines Wahlrechts zugunsten der Straßenbahn stimmt, mit dem Versprechen, dass er noch mehr bekommt, wenn das Gesetz verabschiedet wird. Dies verheimlicht er seiner Frau, denn obwohl er es für ein Geschäft hält, will er es ihr nicht sagen, weil er befürchtet, dass sie es nicht verstehen wird. Sie kommt jedoch hinter sein Geheimnis, als der arme Mann, den die Armut zur Verzweiflung treibt, versucht, das Geld zu stehlen. Ihr werden die Augen geöffnet, als sie den Brief liest, der dem Geld beiliegt, und anstatt ihrem Mann zu erlauben, die Polizei zu rufen, bringt sie ihn dazu, den Mann freizulassen und seine Tat so zu sehen, wie sie sie sieht. Der Politiker erkennt nun, dass der gerade Weg der richtige Weg ist.
