Metropolis (1927) english version
„Metropolis“ is a silent film science fiction drama by Fritz Lang based on the 1927 novel of the same name by Thea von Harbou.
The German science fiction monumental film Metropolis is now considered the film classic par excellence! Financially a fiasco, it was nevertheless groundbreaking for its time, served as a source of inspiration for countless other cinematic masterpieces and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Director Fritz Lang used completely new trick techniques to create an expressionistic, visionary film work of art that foresaw and showed then-unknown technical developments such as robots, videophones and monorails. The large-scale production is based on the novel of the same name by Thea von Harbou, who was also responsible for the script and was married to Fritz Lang for several years.
The film is about a city of the future and the reconciliation between labor and capital, combined with a love story. The long, complex film, shot between May 1925 and October 1926, was rigorously torn apart by critics. Therefore, it was shown again in the cinema shortly afterwards, heavily abridged. Today there are several different versions of this masterpiece. It was only through an old copy found in 2008 that Metropolis was completed again in 2010. Previously, large parts of the film were considered lost.
With Brigitte Helm, who made her film debut in Metropolis, and Gustav Fröhlich as Freder Fredersen, Fritz Lang chose two previously relatively unknown actors for the leading roles. Alfred Abel, Fritz Rasp, Theodor Loos and Heinrich George can be seen in other roles.
